What is a switch?

Jump to: navigation, search

A switch is one of the most simple components. At the most basic level, a switch just connects and disconnects parts of a electric circuit. For almost all of the projects here, we will be using what is called a Single Pole, Single Throw (SPST) switch, which will either have the terminals connected or disconnected based on the state of the switch. Additionally, the switches are momentary push buttons, which means that they will naturally be open (disconnected) until they are pressed, which closes the switch and connects the terminals. As soon as the switch is no longer being pressed it will return to being open.
