I am getting the message Cannot communicate with vex cortex slave cpu....but is can communicate with the master cpu....

any ideas

Usually when we see this issue it's because the Cortex needs its ROBOTC firmware updated. To update the firmware, plug the Cortex into the computer and navigate to the 'Robot -> Download Firmware -> Automatically Update VEX Cortex' menu option; this will check both the Master Firmware (for the Master CPU) and the ROBOTC Firmware (for the Slave CPU) and update each one as needed.

I am teaching an into to robotics class (9th and 10th graders, 14 kids, 7 groups of two) for the first time so I am learning all the things that can go wrong....The kids assured me that they had followed all the steps exactly....I told them to start over from the beginning and do it again and now it workes fine...
