Post subject:  Color sensor support for EV3 programming Virtual NXT

Greetings. I am brand new to the Robot Virtual World. I have it running and have been programming with EV3 since that is what our school will be using for a robotics club. I am trying to program some line detection/following and it appears that the color sensor is not supported. Any idea if/when this will be supported? It is fairly limiting if you cannot even use the light detection functionality of this sensor.

Appreciate any feedback.

Hi maspieljr,
The virtual robots use the NXT light sensor, which is not fully supported in the EV3 software (this is true of physical robots as well). We don't yet have a virtual color sensor. As has been documented by users on other message boards, you can use the Raw Sensor Value block to read from the light sensor, which will return values between about 125 (light) and 925 (dark).

rcahoon,

Thanks for the quick reply and the hint about the raw sensor read.

Any idea when the color sensor might be supported?

I'm concerned that a great deal of fundamental beginner programming relies on the light sensor capability and having to use the raw sensor block would not be a representative way for the kids to leverage RVW to learn how they would be programming real robots.

RVW is a pretty incredible tool and I recognize the significant development that must have gone into it. I hope there can be a simple solution to this in the near future...

Hi maspieljr,
We have an update for Virtual NXT that should be released next week. This version should allow you to use the virtual light sensor using the color sensor blocks in the EV3 programming language. Full support for color sensors is not currently planned for RVW, at least in the near-term (this doesn't mean that we won't add it at some point).

Best,

Wait, are you saying RobotC already supports EV3 in the virtual world?

Hi MHTS,
This thread is regarding Virtual NXT, not RobotC.

I think I got it confused with Virtual World where you download RobotC code to a virtual NXT robot in the Virtual World. So when it said something about working with EV3, then I got confused thinking RobotC already supporting EV3?!

The EV3 language can program NXTs. Therefore, it can be used to program the virtual NXT made by robomatter.

We just released an update for the Virtual NXT: http://www.robotics-academy.org/blog/20 ... xt-update/ It should allow you to use the light sensor in the virtual worlds using the color sensor blocks in the EV3 software.
