yeah I uninstalled the dongle and I had my school's IT guy reinstall the necessary drivers. Found out later that the USB port I was using was breaking which was why I couldn't get any constant connection with the NXT.

Everything works out now - he installed the correct version of RobotC and I haven't had any problems since!
