I'm sure there is some merit to the idea, but I am also pretty sure an AR-Drone doesn't have the cpu power to fly, visually analyse such a situation, and communicate with a swarm of self assembling robots via lights :) They should have used http://www.blender.org/. Just saying.

I know nothing about this, so you could be right. However: the actual calculation could be done from a ground computer, while the drone only provides the camera and LEDs; they could have used a microprocessor like the Raspberry Pi (45g) / Beagleboard(35g) and a board mounted camera.
