Post RobotC crashes on Vista upon selecting Download Firmware
Hello. I'm new to RobotC. I've download and installed the NXT driver, and RobotC. I launch RobotC by right-clicking on it and choosing "Run as Administrator". When selecting Robot/Download Firmware, the dialog box "NXT Brick Download" displays and then RobotC immediately crashes. In the Message Log area of the dialog box, I see two lines:

Searching for any NXT bricks in boot mode
Searching for any NXT bricks connected via USB

My NXT brick is connected via USB and powered on, but not in a boot mode as far as I can tell.

Selecting to debug the application using the VS2005 JIT Debugger, I see this call stack:

Er, that subject line should have been:

RobotC crashes on Vista upon selecting Download Firmware.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

In case it's helpful, the crash occurs regardless of whether the NTX brick is connected.

Unfortunately vista isn't generating a minidump for some reason, but here are some (useful?) details from Vista's "Problem Reports and Solutions" area:

FYI: rebooting does not resolve the issue.

This evaluation is going really well so far. I'm learning some valuable things. For instance, it seems like the product is not supported. If I had a wish, it would be for a special build of RobotC v1.40 that generated a minidump upon unhandled exception. How to generate minidumps: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms680360.aspx. If I had such a build, I would produce a minidump for you and then you could load it up in windbg along with your symbols and get detailed information about what was happening when the crash occurred. Alternately, I could send the minidump to microsoft via WER, and you could get it from them.

Thanks,

Solved.

I had RobotC 1.10 installed, but didn't realize it. This was for some reason getting in the way.

I think that would have been an easy one for your tech support guys, if you had any...

Thanks?

On the support page it says that bugs should be reported via the bug tracker.

On the download page it explicitly says the following:
Quote:
NOTE: Uninstall all previous versions of ROBOTC for Mindstorms before installing latest version.

You can't blame the developers for you not having read the instructions, that hardly seems fair.

Regards,
Xander

Wow, there are other people reading this forum. I was starting to wonder.

You missed a key part of my message:

If anyone helpful had been monitoring the forums, I believe it would have been likely they would have mentioned to verify I didn't have any other version installed. My point is that this would have been easy to mention, but I got no help at all, or even an acknowledgment. That doesn't give confidence to me as I evaluate this software for our project.

The forums are largely populated by people who are quite busy and do lead lives besides reading the forums. I cannot and will not speak for the developers, but I can only assume they are very busy making sure the next release will be even better than the previous one.
There is a good post by Timothy Friez, a member of the RobotC Dev Team, you can check out here. There you will find all the contact details and an explanation why they cannot monitor the forums all the time.

As I said before, if you had wanted support from the company, you should've used the above mentioned contact details. The last time I emailed them with a problem, I had an answer inside a day. Support from the community may not always be as swift as you would like. We all lead busy lives and have our own projects we're working on. However, if you show due diligence in your quest to solve the problem you will find most of us more helpful than you could possibly imagine. There are a lot of experienced people lurking here, some more vocal than others, but all just as valuable. I would not be so hasty as to insult them with such remarks, it will not get you anywhere except labeled a troll.

Regards,
Xander

We are here, iv been gone on a trip. I'm getting caught back up on the forum.

Usually when a Xp computer has an older version, it results in a million compiler errors. This possibly is the vista tell tale sign, I will remember that for the future.
