I remember reading in one of the NXT blogs that the new firmware would be compatible with NXT-G (so we don't have to reload the firmware for FLL). However, I haven't seen anything about it on this site. Is this true or was it just wishful thinking?

It is a goal to merge the two firmwares to be the same, but right now they are still separate firmwares. Someday in the future that may be implemented.

It is similar to a requirement of running IBM PowerPC and Intel Pentium binaries on the very same computer (e.g. Apple Mac): feasible -- but requires a complete duplication of the core. Big heap of work.
