Challenge Statement:

Program two robots to move synchronously and keep track of distance from sound source, and use distance between robots to plot sound intensity vs distance. This should illustrate that sound falls off by the square of the distance to the source.

  1. Build two robots, one with a sound source (possibly the nxt itself) and one with a microphone.
  2. One robot should play the sound while the other robot takes readings.
  3. One or both robots can move, and students should notice the effect on the sound level as the robots add or subtract distance to each other.

Technology Requirements

  • 2 Robot Contollers
  • Encoders
  • Microphone
  • Sound Source

Optional Add-Ons

  • Use this same procedure, but in reverse, to find a sound source using multiple robots.
